I finally got round to deciding to watch Avatar 3D following doubtful thoughts about whether the storyline would be too unbearably poor to enjoy this film. For this viewing I chose London’s newest cinema multiplex; the Vue at Westfield in Shepherds Bush. The multiplex is right above the restaurant area of Westfield.  The film was showing in the Vue Xtreme screen which has digital projection along with one of the biggest screens available nationally.

It was a sell-out screening which began around 30 minutes after the advertised time. From the beginning I was able follow the storyline with relative ease and it wasn’t too long until the awe of 3D and a powerful music track were sweeping the audience into the film and popcorn crunching by those around ceased to bother me (I detest any food consumption in cinemas).

I’d seen the Matrix a decade ago and thought this is simply going to be a similar affair but with the latest in CG and technology merchandising to show off and promote. It was however a somewhat different approach and with a totally alternative style of scripting and screenplay. Avatar 3D takes a more organic, earthly approach to the whole make up and development in fictional environments. It builds on the storylines and 3D modelling brilliance of the latest console games available. Avatar the game for PS3/Xbox will doubtless be in advanced stages of development.

To begin with my expectations of the film hadn’t been too great despite its massive popularity. I went in open minded and left similarly with the view that although the storyline wasn’t to my standard of approval and taste; this was made up for by huge efforts in the CG department, direction  and music composition.

I give Avatar 3D an A minus and as for the Oscars; winning on Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects aint bad going.

We'd like to know your opinions and discuss it with us and others...
