The grounds at Chatsworth take up 1000 acres of the Derbyshire countryside. The garden alone is 105 acres large. Visitors to Chatsworth may stroll the grounds of Chatsworth free of charge, the gardens may be visited separately from the house. It is advised that the gardens and grounds alone can take up to a day to explore.

The Garden

Chatsworth Gardens have evolved over a period of 450 years. Visitors can stroll the 5 miles worth of pathways in Chatsworth gardens including the newly opened (in 2004 by M.P. David Blunkett) sensory garden. One of the highlights to a visit at Chatsworth Gardens is the 300 year old Cascade which falls 200 yards down a hill. For the younger visitors to Chatsworth Gardens there is an extensive maze to explore.

The Waterworks

Chatsworth has some of the most famous waterworks to be found in Europe. They have a history dating back over 400 years with the most recent addition being the Revelation water work in 1999. Water is channelled throughout the gardens via a huge network of pipes, streams and culverts. The water plays an important part in the generation of electricity for Chatsworth House by powering a turbine which generates electricity.

Getting to Chatsworth

Chatsworth is located in south Derbyshire 8 miles north of Matlock Spa and 16 miles from the M1 (junction 29). There are a number of direct bus links to the estate not only from Derbyshire but South Yorkshire and Staffordshire. If you are coming by train then the nearest rail stations are Chesterfield and Matlock to the East and Buxton to the West.
