This tutorial shows you how to design the Apple logo
PLUS produce a simple redesign of the Apple logo in Illustrator CS5 or below using a number of simple tools and colour alterations.

Version: Illustrator CS5 or below

1: Obtain Image

Obtain the Apple logo by doing an image search on a search engine.

With the chosen image enlarged in your browser right-click and select the option to copy the image. Return to Illustrator and select Layer 1, then through the main menu select Edit > Paste. Rename Layer 1 to Apple and then Lock it.

2: Outline

Remaining in the Layer window create a new layer and call it Outline. With the Outline layer selected choose the Elipse Tool (L) and set the stroke to about 5 with a colour of your choosing. Ensure the Fill colour is set to None. Hold down shift whilst dragging over the apple image to make a perfect circle.

Now select Add Anchor Point Tool (+) and then make additional points surrounding the existing ones as illustrated.

With the Selection Tool (A) adjust all points as required to fit the original apple shape. If necessary add further Anchor Points (P +) but try not to add too many.

Give a sharp edged effect to the bite section of the apple by using the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift+C).

For a moment hide the Apple layer to check your outline. Now create a new layer and call it Leaf. Select the Pen Tool (P) and again set the stroke to about 5 with a colour of your choosing. Ensure the Fill colour is set to None. Again use the Elipse Tool (L) and the same procedures to trace over the leaf shape.

3: Colour

Now switch the Stroke and the Fill for both the apple and leaf shapes to leave you with the shapes as solids rather than outlines. You’re now done with the original Apple layer so hide it.

4: Mesh

Now change your shapes to a light grey and then select the Mesh Tool (U) to create a range of gradient colours on the shapes. Using the swatch panel click and drag different shades of white to black onto your mesh’s anchor points. You can also apply swatches in between these for an overall change in the colours of the shape.

5: Drop Shadow

Select both shapes and then from the menu choose Effect> Stylize> Drop Shadow. Experiment with the settings in the Drop Shadow dialogue until you get your desired effect.

6: Complete

Once finished with these steps save and export your image.
